Owning Your Creative

Five Class Goals for a Creative Writing Intro Level Class:

1- Students will embark on solidifying and appreciating their own creative voice.

2- Students will experiment with narration techniques, style, and other elements of craft to expose varied expressions of their internal creativity.

3- Students will learn how to be both active participant and active listener in a workshop atmosphere in a respectful and productively critical way.

4- Students will begin to learn how to read as writers and use reading as an impetus for writing. (Read with attention to craft and how a story is being told.)

5- Students will gain a sense of themselves as creative beings in a world where creativity is necessary. (I would like to instill in students a sense that their work as creative thinkers and artists is valuable and also necessary in a world where we use art to relate to each other and to express sentiments of humanity)

I haven’t included any ground rules, but I do believe I would as a teacher, especially as a teacher of an intro level creative writing class. People don’t come into a workshop knowing how to workshop. I would set down rules to ensure respect as well as to set up an environment where everyone can be heard and or represented.
